German military confirms interception of their communications discussing a Bundeswehr plan to bomb the Kerch Bridge in Crimea using "10-20" German Taurus missiles.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz, leader of the Social Democrats (SPD) party, pledged a quick probe into the leak. The top secret conversation was published 3/2/24 by Russian intelligence sources. Scholz interview and Lavrov response here.
German opposition to the threatens a formal inquiry over the leak. Most German people now oppose further financial and military support to Ukraine in the conflict against Russia and seeks a negotiated solution. Both right-wing and left-wing parties in Germany oppose deepening Germany's involvement in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
Why is the Kerch Bridge important?
- Moscow built the Kerch Bridge to link the annexed Crimean Peninsula to the Russian region of Krasnodar Krai in the northern Caucasus.
- It spans a major domestic commercial sea lane, the Kerch Strait, and separates the Sea of Azov from the Black Sea.
- It is near key Russian Black Sea naval assets in both Crimea and Krasnodar.
- It is used by Russia to transport civilian as well as military supplies over both automobile and rail lanes.
- Its destruction is a major psychological and public relations win for Ukraine, helping it win support in the West.
Ukraine conducted a successful seaborne attack on the Kerch Bridge in 2022, destroying two automobile spans and two lanes. Rail traffic was unaffected. It has attempted several more attacks since then which did not damage the bridge.
